Brian Sheil
INTRODUCTION
Dr Brian Sheil is a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow in the Department of Engineering Science at Oxford. He also holds a Junior Research Fellowship at St Catherine’s College and is an Honorary Research Senior Lecturer at the National University of Ireland, Galway. His research centres on the development of new science and technology to optimise the efficiency and safety of civil infrastructure construction. This has involved the use of advanced numerical modelling, reduced-scale laboratory testing, Bayesian machine learning and real-time field monitoring to inform construction processes and improve design. Brian is currently leading a research project in collaboration with the Satellite Applications Catapult to forecast the collapse of tailings dams by fusing satellite monitoring, geotechnical modelling and deep learning.
